Over 20 years ago, our award-winning surgeons were the pioneers in the minimally invasive procedure known as video assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) designed to treat various disorders of the lungs and chest. As opposed to many surgeons who would perform an open thoracotomy to treat certain thoracic conditions, the Thoracic Group surgeons use the minimally invasive procedure, VATS, to reduce recovery time and risk of complications.
Dr. Robert Caccavale
Dr. Caccavale is board certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery in general thoracic surgery, specializing in thoracic oncology. In addition to his position at the LungCare Comprehensive Cancer Program at CentraState Medical Center as a Co-Medical Advisor, Dr. Caccavale is also Chief of the Thoracic Surgery Division at Somerset Medical Center.
Dr. Jean-Philippe Bocage
Dr. Jean-Philippe Bocage is board certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery in general thoracic surgery. He specializes in minimally invasive thoracic surgery and thoracic oncology and currently holds a position at St. Peter’s University as Chief of Thoracic Surgery. He also serves as a Co-Medical Advisor for the LungCare Comprehensive Cancer Program at CentraState Medical Center.

- Myasthenia Gravis: Myasthenia gravis is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes muscle exhaustion and weakness. A VATS thymectomy performed by Thoracic Group has shown 95% rate of improvement of the disease, with 80% of patients experiencing complete resolution of symptoms.
- Lung Cancer: Using VATS minimally invasive technology, our surgeons can treat various types of lung cancer such as squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma and non-small cell carcinoma.
